Fall River Fishing Report – Northern California Fly Fishing
Fall River fishing continues to be excellent, providing some of the best fly-fishing opportunities in Northern California right now. Anglers are finding success early each morning, with consistent trout activity from the first few hours of daylight.
As the morning progresses, PMD hatches begin to emerge, creating outstanding dry-fly fishing and plenty of opportunities to target rising trout. Dry-dropper rigs have been especially productive in the shallow flats and weed beds, where fish are actively feeding during the hatch. Anglers looking to cover deeper water are finding steady action by nymphing the deeper runs and channels, which continue to produce quality fish throughout the day.
Current Fall River fly fishing tactics include PMD dry flies, dry-dropper setups, and nymph rigs fished beneath an indicator. The river's healthy trout population, strong hatches, and favorable conditions are combining to provide consistent action for both experienced anglers and those new to fly fishing.
If you're planning a Fall River fly fishing trip, now is an excellent time to get on the water. With reliable hatches, productive dry-fly fishing, and steady nymphing opportunities, the Fall River remains one of the premier trout fisheries in California.
McCloud River Fishing Report – Northern California Fly Fishing
The McCloud River has been fishing exceptionally well and is currently offering some of the best dry-fly fishing opportunities in Northern California. If you enjoy targeting wild trout on the surface, this is the time of year to be on the McCloud.
As water temperatures and insect activity increase, trout are actively looking up for larger dry flies that imitate salmon flies and golden stoneflies. These big bugs create exciting visual fishing opportunities, with aggressive takes from the river's hard-fighting wild rainbow trout.
While fish are readily eating dries throughout the day, anglers who aren't converting every rise should consider fishing a dry-dropper rig. Dry-droppers continue to be the most productive setup on the McCloud River, allowing anglers to capitalize on surface activity while also presenting a nymph to fish holding just below.
Current McCloud River fly fishing conditions are excellent, with healthy trout populations, strong stonefly activity, and consistent dry-fly action. Whether you're throwing large stonefly patterns or fishing a dry-dropper setup through pocket water and runs, the McCloud remains one of California's premier wild trout fisheries and a must-fish destination this time of year.
Lower Sacramento River Fly Fishing Report
The Lower Sacramento River continues to fish exceptionally well as flows gradually increase toward summer levels. Trout are feeding aggressively, and anglers are seeing consistent action throughout the day. Recent trips have produced strong morning-to-afternoon bites on sunken spinner patterns, PMDs, and caddis imitations.
When the Bureau of Reclamation initiates pulse flows, deep indicator rigs have been the most productive setup, allowing anglers to effectively target fish holding in deeper water. On days with stable flows, we've been able to mix things up and experiment with a variety of techniques, including nymphing and dry-fly opportunities around active feeding lanes.
No matter the approach, the quality of fish has been impressive. We're consistently landing healthy rainbow trout, with several fish measuring over 20 inches coming to the net.
Evening fishing has been particularly rewarding as hatches ramp up. Caddis and Baetis mayflies continue to bring trout to the surface, creating excellent dry-fly opportunities for anglers willing to stay late. With reliable hatches, strong trout numbers, and improving summer conditions, now is a great time to experience some of the best fly fishing the Lower Sacramento River has to offer.
