We’re excited to return to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula in 2027 for another unforgettable week with Alaska Steelhead Co. September 26 - October 2, 2027

Wild steelhead are the reason we come, but this trip has become about much more than the fish. Remote helicopter fly-outs, big-river floats, intimate tidal fisheries, incredible food, spectacular accommodations overlooking Cook Inlet, and the camaraderie of sharing it all with a great group of anglers make this one of our favorite hosted trips of the year.

But first, let's talk about why we're really going.

The Fishing — Why We're Really Here

The Kenai Peninsula is home to some of the greatest steelhead fishing in the world, and Alaska Steelhead Co. has spent years developing one of the most detailed and expansive steelhead programs offered anywhere.

The program is dialed—but Matt and his team never stop exploring.

They're constantly looking for new opportunities, finding ways to put anglers in front of more fish and fewer people, and going the extra mile to make sure your time in Alaska becomes more than just another fishing trip.

Our primary target is, of course, wild Alaska steelhead.

But we happily embrace the bycatch.

Dime-bright silver salmon, beautifully colored fall dolly varden, and hard-fighting wild rainbow trout can all become part of the experience.

The Big River

From the lodge, we're only a short drive from the big river, where we access miles of twists, fishy corners, gravel bars, and holding water.

This is big, wild Alaska water.

One of the things that makes this river particularly important to our program is its ability to remain fishable when fall rains affect other systems. That gives us another valuable option during Alaska's fall weather and helps make this program one of the more versatile ways we know to chase steelhead around the Pacific Rim.

We'll float, explore, cover water, and fish the places where these wild steelhead want to be.

Fly-Out Fishing — Into the Headwaters

Part of your trip—and some would say the second best part—will be your fly-out day/s.

Your adventure begins right at the lodge, where a helicopter picks you up and carries you deep into the headwaters of some of the Kenai Peninsula's great steelhead rivers.

This is our opportunity to leave the more accessible water behind and pursue wild steelhead in places few anglers ever get the chance to experience.

The flight itself is part of the adventure.

You'll fly over miles of wild Alaska country, with the possibility of spotting bull moose, bears, and other wildlife below before the helicopter drops toward the banks of your chosen river for the day.

Once your boots hit the ground, it's time to fish.

Depending on the river and conditions, you may spend the day floating a remote, meandering river in your own personal raft or hiking a beat that these guides know intimately. They'll lead you through bends, runs, buckets, and holding water as you work your way through country that feels a very long way from anywhere.

You cover the water knowing that the next cast could put a wild Alaska steelhead in the air.

It's difficult to match the feeling of standing on a remote riverbank, watching the helicopter disappear, and realizing that for the day, it's just you, your guide, your fishing partner, and the river.

This is Alaska.

Your standard package includes 1 to 1.5 fly-out days, weather permitting, with the possibility of adding additional fly-outs once you're on site, depending on weather, availability, and conditions.

For many anglers, the fly-out becomes the day they talk about long after the trip is over.

Tidal Steelhead

Then there's the tidal fishing.

The lodge is centrally located to several walk-and-wade opportunities, including water where we can go from the lodge to tidewater in less than ten minutes.

This is an entirely different steelhead experience.

Standing on a grassy bank watching the tide disappear, knowing—and believing—that one of the freshest steelhead you've ever tried to tame may be making its way toward you is difficult to describe.

You watch the water change.

You wait.

You know fresh fish are coming.

And even the most seasoned steelhead angler starts to get that tight feeling in their stomach and that wide-eyed anticipation of what might happen next.

That's steelhead fishing.

Techniques — Fish Your Way

Choose your style. These guides are pros at both.

One of the great things about this program is that you don't have to fish someone else's way.

Whether your idea of steelhead fishing is stepping through a run with a two-hander or watching an indicator disappear, the Alaska Steelhead Co. guides have the experience and knowledge to help you make the most of your time on the water.

Conditions change. Fish move. Rivers rise and fall. Tides bring in fresh steelhead. The guides are on this water every day, following those changes and constantly adjusting their approach to keep you in the game.

Spey Rods — Two-Handers

For many of the guides, swinging flies with a two-handed rod is a favorite way to cover water and pursue these coastal chrome steelhead.

And they're exceptionally good at it.

It's not just about choosing a fly. The guides understand how to match the right line and sink tip to the water, how to control the depth and speed of your presentation, and how to put your fly in front of a fish at exactly the right time in the swing.

They're also proficient casting instructors.

Whether you've been throwing a two-hander for years or are still figuring it out, they'll work with you to make fewer, straighter, more efficient casts- Down and Across and fish like a Ninja will be engrained in your soul. The goal isn't to stand around practicing casting—it's to get your fly fishing correctly, maximize your time in the water, and cover each run as effectively as possible.

We look at Spey fishing as good a technique as any for finding those aggressive steelhead willing to move to a swung fly.

And when one does?

There's very little in steelhead fishing that compares to the grab of a wild fish on the swing, followed by that first explosive run.

Indicator Fishing

Indicator fishing is simply deadly—and these guides are wicked good at it.

Catching steelhead under an indicator starts long before the bobber goes down. It begins with understanding exactly where the fish should be, positioning the boat or angler correctly, making the right cast, and building a rig that gets your fly into the zone and keeps it there.

That's where having guides who are on these rivers every day matters.

They're constantly making adjustments to their rigs, changing depth and weight, watching river conditions, and following fish as they move upstream or enter the system with the tides.

From the boat or while wading, they'll put you in position and help dial in the presentation so your fly is fishing effectively through the best water.

Then comes that moment every indicator angler knows.

The Lodge — Clam Gulch

After a day chasing steelhead, there's no better place to come home to.

Sitting high on the bluffs of Clam Gulch overlooking Cook Inlet, the lodge offers spectacular views across the water toward Alaska's volcanoes, cool sea breezes during the day, and, when the skies cooperate, the chance to watch the Northern Lights dance overhead at night.

The lodge itself is designed around what we believe a great fishing lodge should be.

There are inviting common spaces that bring everyone together over Chef Felix's incredible meals and the day's fish stories, while still offering enough room to spread out, relax, take in the views, and reset for tomorrow's adventure.

Location is another huge part of what makes this lodge special.

The Food — An Experience of Its Own

We've been told the food alone is worth the price of admission—and we agree. It has been said that this is the best part of the trip. 

Chef Felix Barron's five-star dinner experience rivals meals you'll find in Napa or Los Angeles, but here you're enjoying it after a day spent chasing wild Alaska steelhead.

Chef Felix's day starts long before sunrise with an elevated breakfast buffet, strong coffee, fresh juices, and everything you need to fuel up for a full day on the water.

When it's time to fish, lunch doesn't feel like an afterthought. Gourmet sandwiches or wraps are accompanied by what might be the best soup you've ever had riverside, with plenty of snacks to keep you going throughout the day.

And then you come home.

After a long day on the water, you're welcomed back to the lodge with a warm towel and "the day's libation."

There's something about that combination that turns the steelhead switch down a notch and signals that it's time to relax.

Grab a drink, settle in, and let the fish stories begin while Chef Felix puts the finishing touches on a three-course dinner with wine pairings.

Finish the evening with an incredible dessert, find a spot by the fire, and look out over Cook Inlet as the stars come out.

Then get some sleep.
